Bang Bang
Release Date 07/01/1997

“Sometimes I think the real sound of Dispatch was born during the making of Bang Bang. We worked with Jack Gauthier at Lake West Recording Studio in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. Jack is just a very cool guy and an excellent engineer and producer. He helped us create a really honest sound that would shape the band for many years…. plus a funny trivia fact is that Jack’s nickname is Bang Bang.”

– Pete Francis

Lyrics
01. Here We Go

uh huh hey ya
here we go
leave it on the back burner take it to the dry town
ya here we go
I got the mean time slipping down the slide some uptight right wing political homicide
do what you want take what you will
take it in like a southpaw flip it on the grill
bourgeoisie protocol
bottoms up boys this is the last call
happy hour doesn't last too long you know it never does
so I sit here on a bar stool looking at the sky
got a buck and a quarter and a bucket full or rye
don't step out of line you'll get time in the brig
don't yield to the mighty you got your own dirt to dig
leave it on the back burner take it to the dry town
ya here we go
me and my flea bag friends we ran to have our own feast of Crispian
Murphy was there with number twenty-two they were got caught in the middle of a coup
you will lose me if I don't lose you
and I will lose me if I don’t lose you
so we haven't chosen anyone of you to condemn
so make your decision and choose your side or let us begin
steeped in knowledge I'll step from the board
down to the speak easy with my double-edged sword
you know the deal ya got to spin the wheel
I heard the heavens are full of sevens
and as matter of fact you know that cat suicide jack
he don't play like that
truth is he don't really play at all
leave it on the back burner take it to the dry town
ya here we go

03. The General

there was a decorated general with a heart of gold

that likened him to all the stories he told of past battles won and lost and legends of old a seasoned veteran in his own time on the battlefield he gained respectful fame

with many metals of bravery and stripes to his name he grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face and always urged his men on but on the eve of a great battle with the infantry in dream the old general tossed in his sleep and wrestled with its meaning he awoke from the night just to tell what he had seen and walked slowly out of his tent all the men held tall with their chests in the air

with courage in their blood and a fire in their stare it was a grey morning and they all wondered how they would fare til the old general told them to go home I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting I have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I'm going take a shower shine your shoes you got no time to lose you are young men you must be living go now you are forgiven but the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders

not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders the general said he would do his own duty bout would not extend it not further the men could go as they pleased not a man moved their eyes glazed straight ahead

til one by one they stepped back and not a word was said and the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head he then prepared to fight I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting I have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I'm going take a shower shine your shoes you got no time to lose you are young men you must be living go now you are forgiven ya got to be got to got be to got to be hey

04. Bang Bang

she woke me up with the bang bang looking over crossed eyed
had a big hunch that the world was a big lie
when I got up all the blood to my head
I got so dizzy fell back into my bed
I went over to the wayside looking for the high tide
what will I find will I find will I find find
all I saw was a man that had a hat that had a pompom
he’s been there for years can someone tell me how long
wake up to tell me wake up to show me what I could not find
wake up to tell me wake up to show me what I could not
ya see this woman woke me up at a quarter to three
and I didn't know it then but she put a spell on me
she said I had to go down to where the cliffs meet the sea
and meet and old man to present my plea
so I headed way down to that big pier to wait and confront my big fear
I wheeled around behind to my blind side
to find an old man with a lime and a kind eye
said mister mister with your beard so long
won't you be a saint tell me just where I'm going
he pointed to a conch shell and then to the lime and said this is all I really need to get by
wake up to tell me wake up to show me what I could not find
hey hey mister man I know ya don't know who ya think I think I am
but I can safely say that I should of been sleeping
been sleeping been sleeping been sleeping the day away
hey hey I said excuse me have you got the time
he shrugged his shoulders said get a spine
coconut hit me on the head jonesing for a fig
I got booked last night I need another fix dig
yeah just then I see a twinkle twinkle in the old man's eye
and a wave tossed bottle is thrown to the sky
I caught it on the rebound and landed with a soft sound
I took out the message and put the bottle down
inside was the antidote to the spell
I read it to the man 'cause he couldn't read so well
said don't worry about a thing ya know your path is true
just ease your mind have a banana or two
well goodness goodness whoa is me
the man nearly flipped to learn he was free
but just before we left he started kicking it
I picked up the bottle and star sixed it
kick kick shuffle shuffle back to the beach
with a tune on my lips and my quest in reach
that woman come to see you with her song so sweet
say damn let the poor sucker sleep let him sleep
wake up to tell me wake up to show me what I could not find

05. Mission

let it be known to all your misbelieving
what you've been seeing that we will not stand no
will not be mistaken
we will go there leave this weakness
you can’t take this from me
oh ya we will go there leave this weakness
cause ya know I have been waiting
low we are not so we on a mission
to be so well oh well the way I see
damn this damn that there'll be no talk of turning back
damn this damn that there'll be no talk
that we will fly sometimes
that we will find our own way
that we will fly sometimes
that we will find our own
low we are not so we on a mission
to be so well oh well the way I see
that we are not so we are not given
we are not sold on what we have seen
we’re gone we’re gone
good-bye we ain't never coming back no
we're gone we're gone
the list is long we are many strong the ceilings are coming down
low we are not so we on a mission

06. Drive

daddy I want to drive today

it's been years since we've been flying
show me what you're seeing
I wanna feel alive wanna take this dive
hey I wanna drive
I'm alright if you're alright

07. Two Coins

I stick loneliness your lips and the two coins of your eyes into my pockets ya well the train skates into Port Henry a late sunday sometimes when I'm riding high feeling fine

you know there's something troubling me troubling my mind so I reach into my pocket for some small change I reach into my pocket for some small change ya I want bones like iron blood like mercury so I can tell you when I'm rising and when I'm sinking

I’m sinking in

I reach into my pocket for some small change

I reach into my pocket for some small change ya we're gonna take it to the people ya hey let's drink from the cup share some luck go ahead and laugh cause it don't cost much

no no it don’t don’t cost much I stick loneliness your lips and the two coins of your eyes into my pockets

08. Railway

ya ya I think I heard you oh Lord I think I heard you
so all of a sudden I'm facing a raging river that passed me by
do I turn around, do I turn my eye to the sun in the apex of the high noon
I'm on a flatbed yellow pick up underneath a half moon
so cut me some slack jack and jump in the back
if you can't handle the candle they you can't handle the wax
you're just going to get sacked it's as simple as that
but before I know it I'm going down this itty bitty river
in a boat a little bigger than a bath tub
my bones begin to shiver cause I'm aching to deliver
this water that I must give her can I get some
ya ya I think I heard you oh Lord I think I heard you ya
down by the railway station people move in a new direction
take a ticket from who you can drive that train
she was a black-tie bomb shell out of Bombay
she was easy on the eyes so I had nothing to say
said take your water to the leprechaun man you got til the bell rings three
do you understand
a little piece of me wants to go I don't know
turn around what do I do I don't know
ding dong ding that's the bell
and I know you know I know I don't know you very well
but if I did I would groove and hit the ground running
but I don't and I won't so you got another thing coming
he kicked up the river with a flick of his wrist
I popped him in the kisser cause I couldn't resist
I said to my side kick I'm up to my high wick
and now I'm getting a little homesick
so before I know it I'm going down this itty bitty river
in a boat a little bigger than a bath tub
my bones begin to shiver cause I'm aching to deliver
this water that I must giver her can I get some
ya ya I think I heard you ya ya I think I heard you
oh Lord I think I heard you
down by the railway station people move in a new direction
take a ticket from who you can and then drive that train
drive it drive it
I said now drive it drive it
you got to drive your train
ride it ride it
I said now ride it ride
you got to ride your train ya ya ride it

09. Whirlwind

a whirlwind came into my life and it tried to rescue me will you come will you go will you tell me seriously twisting burning my thoughts turning back to you again sweet thing take me to the end you better dig and take a look inside yourself so the story goes or so I've heard it said that you left your land to trade for a place

so far away so out of date that only you could understand and at the ceiling of my feeling backed up against the wall sweet thing you know I'd fall in line you better dig and take a look inside yourself she wants to be free and I want to know a whirlwind came into my life and it tried to rescue me will you come will you go will you tell me seriously twisting burning my thoughts turning back to you again sweet thing take me to the end

she wants to be free and I want to know

10. Out Loud (Live)

would you be the wind to blow me home
would you be a dream on the wings of a poem
and if you were walking through a crowd
well you know I'd be proud
if you'd call my name out loud
do you suppose that I would come running
do you suppose I'd come at all
I suppose I would
and if we were walking down a dead end street
would you be the one to let our eyes meet
or would you just keep on walking down to the turn around
cause you know I'd be proud
if you'd call my name out loud
do you suppose that I would come running
do you suppose I'd come at all
I suppose I would
and if I was gone from the land we know
would be the dawn and let your beauty still show
and if you were walking and heard the cold night coming
would you call my name cause you know I'd come running
if you'd call my name out loud
you know I would
I’d come running
if you’d call my name out loud

11. The Way It Goes (Live)

a forgotten whisper screams at me now so that I don’t forget how
to sit like a child on my mothers knee how dare that child be me
and its trot trot to Boston And its trot trot to Lynn
and trot all the way home again but don’t let me fall in
cause I’m slipping through your legs
I'm slipping through your legs
so race me up the loft up the ladder until I get lost
and let you be an arms length away
so you can wake me and tell me of the day
cause we trot trot to Boston And its trot trot to Lynn
and trot all the way home again but don’t let me fall in
cause I’m slipping through your legs
I'm slipping through your legs
so where are you going did you follow me
and how could you see so well so well
you were helpless like a dove at bay
but what did you say when he pulled it out
did you shout did you shout
cause I’m slipping through your legs
I'm slipping through your legs
so where are you going did you follow me
and how could you see so well so well
you were helpless like a dove at bay
but what did you say when he pulled it out
did you shout did you shout
cause I’m slipping through your legs
I'm slipping through your legs
and the way it goes and I cant remember
