“110,000 people…. this can’t be real! It was real… that’s how many people came to the Hatch Shell on July, 31 2004. I remember on the first song which I think was ‘Here We Go’ my hands felt (to quote Pink Floyd) just like two balloons. I really thought we were going to float away into Boston’s beautiful blue sky.”

– Pete Francis

Lyrics
01. Open Up (Live)

they were looking for me when I came to
they were looking for me when I came back
said hey you you're looking very suspicious
I said relax man get off my back
I I I ain't opposed to seeking justice
but you're going about it all wrong
the man you're looking for does not exist
he's just a figment of the higher man's tongue
and they say open up we're coming inside
you can't run so you may as well hide
we got the place covered from head to toe head to toe
open up we're coming inside
what's it feel like to know you're going to die
on the other side of the row
so they took me down to the gallows and this boy he said to me
why do you smile when the rope's around your neck
I said I tell you boy when I get back
I I I ain't opposed to seeking justice
but you're going about it all wrong
the man you're looking for does not exist
he's just a figment of the higher man's tongue
he’s just a victim of the higher man’s tongue
and they say open up we're coming inside
you can't run so you may as well hide
we got the place covered from head to toe head to toe
open up we're coming inside
what's it feel like to know you're going to die
on the other side of the row
hands above your head que le via bien
Step out of line and we'll fill you with lead
how are we to know that you are not a liar
hey don't you see we have a job to do and our job is the law job is the law
you fit the description of a criminal crosser hey
we believe that he is you and that is your flaw
that is your flaw
and they say open up we're coming inside
you can't run so you may as well hide
we got the place covered from head to toe head to toe
open up we're coming inside
what's it feel like to know you're going to die
on the other side of the row

02. Time Served (Live)

hold up the firing line hold up the fire
walk away counting backwards from nine
hold up the firing line hold steady on the trigger's time
walk away counting backwards from nine
holding his breath so to start his own dying
time time served to the ones that left you here
no people here only names soon to be put to numbers so its one in the same
it's anyone's game as long as the fire flickers
the throat stickers they place their bet the trouble is that no one's added it up quite yet
cause when they do when they do when they do when they do
it'll be a riot and the wire is down
hold up for the fury to sound hold up your head from the ground
or they'll keep you on it
your time time served to the ones who left you here
from tower to wall to guard to guard to wall
ever ready for the fire to fall
the confinees haven't seen the sun since the lifers let go of their irrelevant innocence
but long before a single round was shot word spread from block to block to cell block
they're going to take him and make an example of him for the escapees to fear
the incoming of the incoming of the gun oncoming another year
you either die on the inside or trying to get out the choice is yours the choice is here
time served to the ones who left you here

03. Here We Go (Live)

uh huh hey ya
here we go
leave it on the back burner take it to the dry town
ya here we go
I got the mean time slipping down the slide some uptight right wing political homicide
do what you want take what you will
take it in like a southpaw flip it on the grill
bourgeoisie protocol
bottoms up boys this is the last call
happy hour doesn't last too long you know it never does
so I sit here on a bar stool looking at the sky
got a buck and a quarter and a bucket full or rye
don't step out of line you'll get time in the brig
don't yield to the mighty you got your own dirt to dig
leave it on the back burner take it to the dry town
ya here we go
me and my flea bag friends we ran to have our own feast of Crispian
Murphy was there with number twenty-two they were got caught in the middle of a coup
you will lose me if I don't lose you
and I will lose me if I don’t lose you
so we haven't chosen anyone of you to condemn
so make your decision and choose your side or let us begin
steeped in knowledge I'll step from the board
down to the speak easy with my double-edged sword
you know the deal ya got to spin the wheel
I heard the heavens are full of sevens
and as matter of fact you know that cat suicide jack
he don't play like that
truth is he don't really play at all
leave it on the back burner take it to the dry town
ya here we go

04. Cover This (Live)

Wounded, you can take me there I was wounded, you can take me there 'Cause there was a crime that I was left But will you go on without me? Think I'll just walk myself to sleep

'Cause I ain't workin' for your father But I might as well be I ain't lookin' for confusion But it tends to follow me "You can come into my house", she said If you do it quietly But I said, "There ain't no chance at that"

'Cause I am listenin' to what you got Put up your hands if you want me to stop And I turn around, but I think you're crazy If you think this happens a lot Oh, do you like this? Do you need someone to cover you Just to show you what you missed?

Wounded, and I will go if you go first But I, ain't gonna wait around Tell me how much is your dime worth? We got, ten minutes to get there We got, ten minutes to go Throw this one in for the money 'Cause the next one's for the next show

I ain't workin' for your father But I might as well be I ain't lookin' for confusion But it tends to follow me "Oh you can come into my house", she said If you do it quietly But I said, "There ain't no chance at that"

'Cause I am listenin' to what you got Put up your hands if you want me to stop Well I turn around, but I think you're crazy If you think this happens a lot Oh, do you like this? Do you need someone to cover you Just to show you what you missed?

So hey, where you goin'? Do you need somebody, somewhere To help you get on by? 'Cause I think, you know who I am And I'm gonna make this, as fast as I can Some people call me the pusher man I promise it won't take long no no no no Just close your eyes and get in the van

I am listenin' to what you got Put up your hands if you want me to stop And I turn around, but I think you're crazy If you think this happens a lot Oh, do you like this? Do you need someone to cover you Just to show you want you missed?

'Cause I am listenin' to what you got Put up your hands if you want me to stop And I turn around, but I think you're crazy If you think this happens a lot Oh, do you like this? Do you need someone to cover you Just to show you want you missed?

05. Riddle (Live)

Heard of a land held by a troubled hand Where the whisky runs cold Don't you dare go ask the newsman ‘cause he'll tell you everything he don't know

She was a child of the second American Revolution Tall girl with a stone's constitution When fell into the hands of the enemy She touched her hand and sank her ankles deep

So go riddle me over I'm a man got nothing to show for My work in the ground In this here London town

So go riddle me over I'm a man got nothing to show for My work in the ground Got my back to the fire but it ain't the bridges that are falling down

Ophelia used to swim in the rain Ain't nothing she'd rather do I was beside myself when the news had came And it had nothing to do with you

They said they would never fight no more After the day she went away What in the world are we all asking for? If we don't give he's sure to take

So go n' riddle me over I'm a man got nothing to show for My work in the ground In this here London town

So go n' riddle me over I'm a man got nothing to show for My work in the ground Got my back to the fire and my feet on the ground But it ain't the bridges that are falling

Go n' riddle me over I'm a man got nothing to show for My work in the ground Go ahead and go and riddle me over But it ain't the bridges that are falling down

06. Bang Bang (Live)

she woke me up with the bang bang looking over crossed eyed
had a big hunch that the world was a big lie
when I got up all the blood to my head
I got so dizzy fell back into my bed
I went over to the wayside looking for the high tide
what will I find will I find will I find find
all I saw was a man that had a hat that had a pompom
he’s been there for years can someone tell me how long
wake up to tell me wake up to show me what I could not find
wake up to tell me wake up to show me what I could not
ya see this woman woke me up at a quarter to three
and I didn't know it then but she put a spell on me
she said I had to go down to where the cliffs meet the sea
and meet and old man to present my plea
so I headed way down to that big pier to wait and confront my big fear
I wheeled around behind to my blind side
to find an old man with a lime and a kind eye
said mister mister with your beard so long
won't you be a saint tell me just where I'm going
he pointed to a conch shell and then to the lime and said this is all I really need to get by
wake up to tell me wake up to show me what I could not find
hey hey mister man I know ya don't know who ya think I think I am
but I can safely say that I should of been sleeping
been sleeping been sleeping been sleeping the day away
hey hey I said excuse me have you got the time
he shrugged his shoulders said get a spine
coconut hit me on the head jonesing for a fig
I got booked last night I need another fix dig
yeah just then I see a twinkle twinkle in the old man's eye
and a wave tossed bottle is thrown to the sky
I caught it on the rebound and landed with a soft sound
I took out the message and put the bottle down
inside was the antidote to the spell
I read it to the man 'cause he couldn't read so well
said don't worry about a thing ya know your path is true
just ease your mind have a banana or two
well goodness goodness whoa is me
the man nearly flipped to learn he was free
but just before we left he started kicking it
I picked up the bottle and star sixed it
kick kick shuffle shuffle back to the beach
with a tune on my lips and my quest in reach
that woman come to see you with her song so sweet
say damn let the poor sucker sleep let him sleep
wake up to tell me wake up to show me what I could not find

07. Ride a Tear (Live)

Drop into the mystery of a whip Speak, repeat, I'm not listenin' Sit up, undress, we'll do the rest Tongues as long as hallway carpets

I ride a tear Through this world and disappear I ride a tear Through this world and disappear

Take all your bones and make a new throne Ice in your eyes is getting too cold See the flame figure in the window She's got her word to say

I ride a tear Through this world and disappear I ride a tear Through this world and disappear

Drop into the mystery of a whip Speak, repeat, I'm not listenin' Sit up, undress, we'll do the rest Tongues as long as hallway carpets

I ride a tear Through this world and disappear I ride a tear Through this world and disappear

Through this world and disappear Through this world and disappear Through this world and disappear Through this world and disappear Through this world and disappear

08. Lightning (Live)

we hear the dealers with the words that ride the tails of their cigarette smoke
sliding through the tunnels of our ears
those greasy marionettes of real bone and blood
stand on the corner of Washington Square
well our vision was stinging and our eyes were blurring
elevator's got you rising so high seventeen floors you want so much more
there's lightning on the ceiling coming from the corner of her eye
somewhere horses flee from thunder
somewhere the bones of a cat are buried under a garden ya
well there's a radio on broken songs empty digression
it won't be long wont be long til you and me are gone from here
and there’s lightning on the ceiling coming from the corner of her eye
we hear the dealers with the words that ride the tails of their cigarette smoke
sliding through the tunnels of our ears
those greasy marionettes of real bone and blood
stand on the corner of Washington Square
well our vision was stinging and our eyes were blurring

09. Mayday (Live)

I saw you yesterday
your eyes were the color of some kind of grey
I hear what you're saying please don't let me go
I got all these people down below
they rush to talk they rush to say man overboard
mayday mayday mayday
troubles are brought back by you
funny how we we go down
we go anywhere but to the ground
troubles are brought back by you
funny how we we go down
we go anywhere but to the ground
so I hear that you're doing fine
you've flown all them planes that have been on your mind
I can't understand I don't need to know
I'll speak to you through this radio
they rush to talk they rush to say man overboard
mayday mayday mayday
troubles are brought back by you
funny how we we go down
we go anywhere but to the ground
troubles are brought back by you
funny how we we go down
we go anywhere but to the ground
there’s a man and he’s overboard

10. Even (Live)

come now to the edge of the road you can see them all crowding around
soon they'll come in and come up here
let them find an effigy but they'll never find me
head man I live to see you rolled away
they'll never ever ever find me
headman walking right in front of me don't you look in I'm not here you see
dead man told me where I am to hide said he's waiting there where it's all even
even
you can feel them coming up through your heels
and outside misconstrued the search continues
the hidden afraid are never betrayed by the already found and taken away
oh and in a different place
the hands that hold your face are only trying only trying to keep you warm
they'll never ever ever find me
headman walking right in front of me don't you look in I'm not here you see
dead man told me where I am to hide said he's waiting there where it's all even
even
even like me
walk on will we walk on with our heads to the wall
let them find that they'll never find us all
cause they wanted a life less hidden
they wanted a life but I'll never give them part of me
part of me
I will save my right so hard to the ground
til we all lay down til we lay ourselves down
you can feel them
you can feel them coming

11. Passerby (Live)

well I'm not crazy like my brother but its the way that I choose
I don’t hang around with a sixpence when I got everything to lose
would you bring my money and take from me all that I was worth
cause I wasn’t worth nothing and I wasn’t yours
oh don't you be a passerby oh won't you sit down and stay a while
cause it's been too long since you been around
sold out man from across the way he thought he heard what he heard you say
hey now man your watch it shines for the bid of a second yields him forty times
oh don't you be a passerby oh won't you sit down and stay a while
cause it's been too long since you been around
don’t wanna be a
woman little child
hey woman hey woman little child
hey woman hey woman
oh don’t ya be a passerby
oh don’t ya leave me alone

12. Prince of Spades (Live)

coming back coming home
the queen of love enters the room silence ensues
to the king what have you done to my life
did you take me for a fool or for a wife I
and the king is in his court counting all his diamonds one by one they do fall
says the queen our pride the prince of spades is coming home
be nice if you could find some time alone
after all he's in line for the throne
and the king is in his court counting all his diamonds
one by one they do fall oh they do fall
so now just get up off your ass leave all your treasures behind
your son is coming home with you to spend time
show him how a good king should be and don't ever forget the day
that you turned your back on him and me

13. Past the Falls (Live)

the wind blew and her hair stood still
he sits beneath her window sill
she awaits the magic in his hands
he walks her out into the night
and takes her in a different light
her eyes divert to the water beneath his feet
the water beneath his feet
oh the water beneath his feet
the boy wakes up and runs outside
to find that all his fears have died
and all the shells are laying upon the sand
she kicks a rock along that road
stood still while the story was told
do you believe in me he said
can you believe in me
you believe in me
oh you believe in me
will you follow me
will you follow me past the falls
the wind blew and her hair stood still
he sits beneath her window sill
she awaits the magic in his hands
he walks her out into the night
and takes her in a different light
her eyes divert to the water beneath his feet
oh the water beneath his feet
the water beneath his feet
oh you believe in me
you believe in me

14. Bullet Holes (Live)

Black birds with bullet holes, bullet holes Scattered across the sky I wonder These steep hills Unto the great light My fingers collapse around my pen Like soldier tryin' to hold up the flag I'm callin' out, once again In this letter to you my friend In this letter to you my friend In this letter to you my friend

And don't tell me you been comin' up easy Stop, drop, you're life is greasy You used to say that you would come around Oh baby, but you're never here

You have been Up above so high so high so high And lived, in the dirt You have felt Some love And you Have been hurt

Well I've gone to shorten my road With a fistful of matches, but nothin' to strike (nothin' to strike) And as we walk along the cove And know that this is right You may think I'm crazy You may think I'm foolish But I'm coming through the lightning Comin' back to you

Don't tell me you been comin' up easy Stop, drop, you're life is greasy You used to say that you would come around Oh baby, but you're never here

You have been Up above so high so high so high And lived, in the dirt You have felt Some love And you Have been hurt

Oh my my my my my my my I'm comin' through Oh my my my my my my my I'm feelin' fine Oh my my my my my my my Oh my my my oh my

You have been Up above so high so high so high And lived, in the dirt You have felt Some love And you Have been hurt

Oh you have been you have been Up above up above And you've lived and you've lived in the dirt in the dirt Oh you have been you have been Some love some love Oh you have been you have been hurt You have been up above

15. Fallin' (Live)

Fallin', I am fallin' down the mountain once again Fallin', I am fallin' down the mountain once again

Does anybody know this man, can anybody understand? How long is the road we come today? Days now rapped in silence, wonder what is this violence Keeps his mouth locked shut and his tongue at bay

Fallin', I am fallin' down the mountain once again Fallin', I am fallin' down the mountain once again

Senior, I have a question, in you is there a lesson A story rapped so tight that you need share You got a trusted as a stranger, you escaped your recent danger Tell me what in this life we need beware?

Please excuse my insolence, I did nothing here to offend Though my eyes don't blink, yes, my mind does think that In you I've found a friend Oh, please accept my innocence I did nothing more this day When I was lost you were the 'cause that I knew I would surely be

Fallin', I am fallin' down the mountain once again Fallin', I am fallin' down the mountain once again

Fallin', I am fallin' down the mountain once again Fallin', I am fallin' down the mountain once again

16. Two Coins (Live)

I stick loneliness your lips and the two coins of your eyes into my pockets ya well the train skates into Port Henry a late sunday sometimes when I'm riding high feeling fine

I’m sinking in

I reach into my pocket for some small change

I reach into my pocket for some small change ya we're gonna take it to the people ya hey let's drink from the cup share some luck go ahead and laugh cause it don't cost much

no no it don’t don’t cost much I stick loneliness your lips and the two coins of your eyes into my pockets

17. Bridges (Live)

the furrowed bed of sand worries again
as it had before waves left the land
before the falling tide leaves the child weeping alone
he's letting go of the anchor and all the lines
waiting for the fingers of the grey wave or his mother's hand
to roll over him with endless water
10,000 bridges show me father
now I'm older now much older
and this wake can’t take me out to sea.
I feel the pull beneath my feet
but I can see her she is calling me
I can feel her there I can feel her there
waiting for the fingers of the grey wave or his mother's hand
to roll over him with endless water
10,000 bridges show me father

18. Elias (Live)

na jesu achwanekwa ta esu fa da da he
ta esu fa da da he fa da da he
na jesu achwanekwa ta esu fa da da he
ta esu fa da da he fa da da he
kasiwa i kasiwa i ma ka simba ere
ndakasimba kanamakasimbaow
ndakasimba ndakasimba
ndakasimba kanamakasimbaow
you raise your head you beat the sun
but your boys they lie so close to you
do you dare get up and wake the two
oh Elias I see you there at work in the day time
do you think you could answer all the questions in the world
in just one word I think you could
if you die will I get word that you’re gone
or will I hear it in passing conversation
or will I stop short and fall to the ground
distance is short when your hand carries what your eye found
hold my hand just one more time
to see if you're really gonna meet me
Honest and Manuel well they're at school now
given the chance that their father's never seen
to see what's beyond Section 17
and in ten years when you look back at your boys
well you know they've grown
way taller than the tallest sugar cane in the field
if you die will I get word that you’re gone
or will I hear it in passing conversation
or will I stop short and fall to the ground
distance is short when your hand carries what your eye found
hold my hand just one more time
to see if you're really gonna meet me
and I see your wife she stands stooped over by the fire outside
and I see your boys and when they look up
you know I think they got their mother's eyes
cause she looks so proud she looks so happy
she looks so proud she looks so happy ya
if you die will I get word that you’re gone
or will I hear it in passing conversation
or will I stop short and fall to the ground
distance is short when your hand carries what your eye found
hold my hand just one more time
to see if you're really gonna meet me

19. Carry You (Live)

green river flows like grass melting
later it will run black down it's track into an ocean.
she stands on the bridge dim light on her back
well someday I will carry you
I will carry you
I wanna float higher above waves of electric wires
and stare down onto the street I see a drunk with kiln glazed eyes
telling me about the girl I should meet someday
I will carry you

20. Bats (Live)

old man river said you can go your own way

if you just leave him alone doesn’t matter do not deliver all your things today we are going home oh mama we now so hungry I got bats in the belfry I'm in the kitchen boiling society I'm in the open catching all the leaves we all see what we want old man river said you can go your own way

if you just leave him alone doesn’t matter do not deliver all your things today we are going home oh mama we now so hungry I got bats in the belfry I'm in the kitchen boiling society I'm in the open catching all the leaves we all see what we want I have a crazy idiosyncrasy it's affinity to serendipity and in this eternal epiphany no hypocrisy or duplicity oh mama we now so hungry

I got bats in the belfry I'm in the kitchen boiling society

21. Outloud (Live)

Would you be the wind to blow me home Would you be a dream On the wings of a poem And if we were walking through a crowd Well you know I'd be proudIf you call my name out loud If you call my name out loud Do you suppose that I would come running Do you suppose I'd come at all I suppose I wouldAnd if we were walking Down a dead end street Would you be the one to let our eyes meet Or would you just keep on walking Down to the turn around 'cause you know I'd be proud

If you call my name out loud If you call my name out loud Do you suppose that I would come running Do you suppose I'd come at all I suppose I would

And if I was gone from the land we know Would ya be the dawn And let your beauty still show And if you were walking And heard the cold night coming Would you call my name 'cause you know I'd come running

If you call my name out loud If you call my name out loud Do you suppose that I would come running Do you suppose I'd come at all

You know I would You know I would You know I would You know I would

I'll come running...

If you call my name out loud

22. The General (Live)

there was a decorated general with a heart of gold

that likened him to all the stories he told of past battles won and lost and legends of old a seasoned veteran in his own time on the battlefield he gained respectful fame

with many metals of bravery and stripes to his name he grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face and always urged his men on but on the eve of a great battle with the infantry in dream the old general tossed in his sleep and wrestled with its meaning he awoke from the night just to tell what he had seen and walked slowly out of his tent all the men held tall with their chests in the air

with courage in their blood and a fire in their stare it was a grey morning and they all wondered how they would fare til the old general told them to go home I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting I have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I'm going take a shower shine your shoes you got no time to lose you are young men you must be living go now you are forgiven but the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders

not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders the general said he would do his own duty bout would not extend it not further the men could go as they pleased not a man moved their eyes glazed straight ahead

til one by one they stepped back and not a word was said and the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head he then prepared to fight I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting I have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I'm going take a shower shine your shoes you got no time to lose you are young men you must be living go now you are forgiven ya got to be got to got be to got to be hey
